“A child once feeble-minded is never made normal. A very, very small percentage of them can be trained so that they may be able to eke out a miserable existence, perhaps supporting themselves; but it is probably cruel to require even that of them.”
H. Goddard (1914, p. xviii), in School Training for Defective Children
Course Purpose:
This course provides students and developing scholars with an overview of the history of conceptualizations of neurodiversity and attends to how those conceptualizations have shaped social policy, practice, legislation, and research over time. As a community of learners, we will explore and discuss the historical roots of the medical model of disability, the emergence of the social model of disability, and the ongoing tensions between both. Learners will also be introduced to the foundational texts of the Neurodiversity Movement as well as the ongoing research and writings of neurodivergent scholars and activists as we work together to develop a better understanding of neurodivergent perspectives, experiences, and lives within the US context.
